Municipal Archaeological Museum

It is located in the very central Palazzo Galvani, previously known as Death Hospital. It exhibits rich collections illustrating the archaeology of Bologna and the city growth since its prehistory. The Etruscan civilisation is represented by stelae, ceramics and bronze artefacts, coming from the necropolis of ancient Felsina. The Roman collection includes tombstones, statues and ivory objects; the head of Athena Lemnia, a Roman marble replica of a Phidias’ bronze statue, is one of the most outstanding works of art held by the Museum. The Egyptian collection is one of the most important in Europe. The numismatic collection, which is made up of more than 100,000 pieces, is not currently exhibited, but it is fully catalogued on-line.
