The Archiginnasio
The study of anatomy is deeply-rooted in the tradition of the city. It dates from the early 14th century, since the times of Mondino de’ Liuzzi, who was one of the early pioneers who practiced cadaver dissection to study human anatomy. The Anatomy Theatre was built in 1637 within Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio (the seat of the Bologna University until 1803 and now turned into a major conservation library). It is decorated by precious wooden statues and carvings, such as the Skinned statues (following the models by the sculptor Ercole Lelli).
